VOIP Explained.
The term VoIP is also known as voice over internet protocol which is a way of making calls through a digital signal rather than using a telephone line. It is essentialy the term that describes the innovative technology of transmitting voice signals thru an IP address.
Here, high speed internet connection is used instead of transmitting voice signals over the traditional phoneline. When you talk through a VoIP mechanism, the signal travels in the digital mode, to the person located at other end, via your internet connection. Depending on the used device, the signal may have to be transferred from an analog signal into a digital one, and vice versa on the other side.
Communication through a computer is the oldest and most commonly used technique of VoIP. We all know that we can communicate through microphones linked to the computer systems over the internet, while the person at the other end may be using headphones as well and speakers. Since the entire signal can be transmitted digitally via the internet hence this is the cheapest mode of VoIP communication. Skype is known to be the best and most admired source that also allows calls from one computer to another free of cost, even if you are making call to the other side of the globe . In addition to computer to computer communication, one may as well call any telephone from a computer using the similar source. In such a case, the signals are converted from digital to analog form at the other end for transmitting them through the other telephone set. No wonder it is not a free service, but still the cost is very low as compared to charges of calls between telephones.
The computers are not the only mode to talk when using VoIP. Now telephone adaptors are also available that convert an analog signal to a digital one during the transmission, and vice versa at the other end. The adaptor bonds the telephone with a special router that establishes connection with the net. When someone speaks into the telephone, the signal travels through the adaptor, gets transformed from the analog signal to a digital one. Then that signal is transmitted via the internet to the other end. If such an adaptor is also attached at the other end, then the digital signal will be converted back to the analog signal.
Along with VoIP adaptors, VoIP handsets are also available in the market now. For a user, the working of a VoIP phone is similar to that of a regular telephone. The difference is in the way the signal travels. An Ethernet cable is connected to a VoIP phone, plugged directly in a modem or router. It is using this technology in the similar method as used on a computer, but no such difference is visible to a common man. Computer help is sometimes needed to get this to work correctly.
The major advantage of using VoIP is its cheaper rates as compared to the traditional telephone line. This technology helps consumer save a lot on money. A lot of such service providers offer limitless number of calls per month. Sometimes international calls are also included, for a normal monthly cost.
VoIP is a comparatively latest technology, and due to the savings offered, it has become increasingly popular. The quality may not match the one delivered by traditional telephone but it will surely enhance with time beating the old systems. Many posts are being made in our Computer help forum.
