The registry’s functions

A list of information and data —called the computer’s registry— is automatically formed with an operating system loaded into the machine. As its name implies, it is the roster of data files, instructions, and settings important to the computer’s operations system and softwares. It enables the computer to logically scan, select and retrieve the needed data files and instructions for an operation.

Complexity comes later

As you use the computer, updates to the softwares, file systems, panel settings and others are added to the registry, creating compounded associations of files and settings and instructions. In addition, even though new updates are loaded into the system, the old files they replaced or superseded are not deleted nor filed in other places. They remain where they are, and although not used, are still accessed by the computer’s operating system each time you boot the machine to use it. In other words, the operating system scans each file, determines if it is relevant to the operation at hand, retrieves it if it is and discards it if not, and proceeds to the next file, copying the needed file into the memory for use in the operation. An update may have a lot of information, many of them unneeded because they are already obsolete or replaced by later versions. But the computer will still download them if you allow it by not being selective. All the updates between your last and the present updating in fact will be loaded with the automatic update method. What happens after

Ultimately a registry loaded with unneeded information is made that the system yet reads each time. All these retard the computer’s operation and may even make it crash later if left uncorrected for some time. A crash totally halts the operation and may, at the same time, damage the system itself by corrupting bits of information. Too many illogical and perhaps contradictory instructions and something will break up sooner or later.

Thus the registry becomes leaner and the files are more easily accessed, resulting in a faster and more accurate operation.
