The Samsung CLP 600 laser printer prints in full color at 2400 x 600 dpi, generating offset quality pictures and graphics. This is not a small office – home office printer on steroids: this is a workgroup and large office solution that handles legal size, letter size, labels, transparencies, cards and envelopes. In addition to transparencies, it prints on plain paper or all common bonds and card stock. The dimensions of the Samsung CLP 600 laser printer are 18.4 x 18.4 x 17.6, width, depth, height.

This is not a beast, measuring (in inches) 18.5 X 18.5 X 17.8 in width, depth and height. In metric terms, that is (in centimeters), 46.5 X 46.5 X 44.5. The Samsung CLP 600 is not for the small office/home office segment: it weighs a solid 62.7 pounds (28.5 kilos) and 32 megabytes of RAM, SPL-C language simulation and a 250MHz processor comes standard. Full color legal size prints roll out at 20 pages per minute, with letter size full color prints being produced 21 times per minute. Paper capacity (20 bond) is 350. And you’ve got to like the 45,000-page duty cycle.

System requirements for the Samsung CLP 600 laser color printer, according to the documentation provided, are; Microsoft Windows 2000/98SE/ME/XP, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Red Hat Linux 8.0 and 9.0, SuSE Linux 8.2 and 9.2 and Apple Mac 10.3 and 10.4 operating systems. Connectivity is a 4 pin, Type B hi-speed USB.

Server 2003 compatibility enables the Samsung CLP 600 to act as the print server for the office, so no additional hardware (i.e., a print server) is required.

For me, the plus points of the Samsung CLP 600 are the previously mentioned ability to directly connect to the LAN, eliminating the need for a print server, the 250 MHz processor and the standard 32 megs of RAM, and the 2400 X 600 dots per inch resolution. On the downside, it is not as fast as some other printers with a similar line-up of features and in the same price range. The average print speed in this feature/price market segment is 28 pages per minute (the CLP 600 is 21 for letter size, full color).

One of the new breed of medium enterprise market laser printers, the has 200+MHz processors, more RAM and engines that roll out 20+ pages per minute with high availability and reliability. For workgroups, these next-gen units offer network-wide printing services, large out-put and input trays and 4000 page capacity toner cartridges.

With that said, the Samsung CLP 600 was one of the first next-generation printers aimed at the SME and Workgroup markets. There are tens of thousands of these guys churning out copy every day of the year. The CLP 600 is a good example of over-build, with a 4000 page capacity printer toner, 32 megs of RAM and a 250 MHz processor.

Speaking of which, Samsung CLP 600 toner cartridge comes in the usual line up for color printing (Magenta, Yellow, Black and Cyan) and is widely available, despite this printer no longer being in production. It is additionally available from non-Original Equipment Manufacturers. The large take up of this printer and the reliability means thousands of Samsung CLP 600 Printers will be in service, and being serviced, for years to come.
